Social Justice Student Coalition

The CUDPT Social Justice Coalition was formed in Summer 2020 by a group of dedicated students who recognized the ongoing social injustices and widespread bigotry presented in our world today. We wish to establish a new precedent - one that includes persistent reflection of our own communties' ignorance in order to seek out the roots of these injustices and move us toward change.

Programs in Physical Therapy - SJC

Mission Statement

We seek to generate awareness of systematic oppression, advocate for health equity, and increase cultural competence within the Columbia University DPT Program and the physical therapy profession. We are committed to creating opportunities for action and encouraging activism. We will build spaces that sustain the capacity of students, faculty, and staff to embrace difficult and uncomfortable conversations that challenge our community to reflect on our biases. We will collaborate with faculty to create policies to equalize the realms of racial, social, sexual, and gender diversity. Through these efforts, we hope to promote a culture of justice and create a community where we can express, recognize, and cherish our unique differences.

Core Values

Dynamic Dialogue

Seeking more to understand than to be understood, we strive for clear, truthful communication with the understanding that all ideas will be considered but not all ideas are capable of holding to critical inquiry in the same way.

Critical Thinking

We aim to cultivate the skills to uncover and question our assumptions in an effort to view ideas from different perspectives while accurately and appropriately engaging in the subject matter in accordance with the mission of the community.

Reflective Practice

In an effort to foster awareness, acceptance, and respect for authentic and diverse viewpoints, we will open the space for the group to actively apply dynamic dialogue and critical thinking. By doing so, we will foster acceptance in our program and the physical therapy profession.

Cultural Humility

To develop and promote equitable strategies and best practices within the realms for racial, social, sexual, and gender diversity, we will maximize the program's capacity to participate in social change to improve healthcare for future patients and develop programming that is culturally competent.
