Available Positions

Postdoctoral Research Scientist Position – Laboratory of Dr. Christine Kim Garcia (Aging, Fibrosis, Injury and Repair)

The Genetics of Lung Disease Research Program at Columbia University Irving Medical Center is recruiting a full-time Postdoctoral Research Scientist position in the laboratory of Dr. Christine Garcia. We seek a well-trained and highly motivated scientist to work in close coordination with existing program members. The laboratory employs novel mammalian cell and animal models generated by CRISPR/Cas9 and conditional knockout technologies to study the biology of lung fibrosis, short telomere and senescence related cell signaling, and responses to injury and repair. We seek a highly recommended scientist to understand molecular mechanisms underlying the genetics of human pulmonary fibrosis and to define how genetic alterations lead to mammalian pathophysiology. With the resources currently available, we expect that these projects will bridge multiple biomedical fields of high interest. We anticipate that the postdoctoral research experience will lead to exciting opportunities in academia, research or industry.

The Postdoctoral candidate will be involved with a range of activities, including:

  • Design of experiments, demonstration of rigor and creativity in experimentation
  • Molecular biology activities including cloning, mutagenesis, plasmid purification
  • Mammalian tissue culture, transfection, and stable cell line experiments
  • Lentiviral construction, growth, and use
  • Mouse husbandry and breeding, Animal experiments involving the response to lung injury
  • Development and Maintenance of Organoid bodies and Primary cells derived from mice
  • Tissue histology, Immunofluorescence analysis, Confocal and Light microscopy
  • Nucleic acid, Protein, Metabolite isolation from mammalian cells and tissues
  • Enzymatic measurements of protein and metabolites from mammalian cells and tissue
  • Quantitative rtPCR, Immunoblot, and Immunofluorescence analyses of mammalian samples
  • Deep sequencing, Epigenetic analysis of mammalian cell and tissue
  • Data summary, Statistical analysis, Implementation of workflow improvements

Qualifications

  • Education (MD and/or PhD) and experience in a relevant field, such as molecular biology, genetics, nutrition, integrative physiology, biochemistry or pharmacology
  • Prior and significant experience with a majority of activities listed above
  • A publication record that reflects an ability to function as a skilled and developing scientist
  • Excellent oral and written English communication skills
  • Ability to adapt to a fast-paced and dynamic environment
  • Ability to work effectively in a team and Attention to detail are necessary
  • Prompt organization and storage of primary data is required
  • Accurate and timely documentation of laboratory efforts is mandatory
