Pyogenic Granuloma
- A misnomer because neither granulomatous inflammation nor pyogenic process is present.
- Aberrant wound healing process, which results in fibrovascularized tissue growth.
- Rarely occur spontaneously.
- Usually occurs over chalazion, after conjunctival surface surgery such as strabismus surgery, or pterygium removal, chronic irritation from nasolacrimal tubing or punctal plugs.
Clinical Features
- Symptoms:
- Irritation
- May cause inadequate lid closure or corneal dellen if located near the limbus
- Signs:
- Initially presents as ovoid mass with pedunculated base, which may broaden over time
- Fibrous adhesion to the underlying sclera.
- Treatment of choice: simple excision at of the base of the lesion.
