Programs and Initiatives
Faculty Diversity and Inclusion
The Columbia University Irving Medical Center strongly supports the diversity of its faculty. We at CUIMC believe that excellence, diversity and inclusivity are inextricably linked, and that different experiences, perspectives and values are essential elements that enrich every dimension of our work. A diverse faculty facilitates culturally competent medical education and clinical care, and also brings important and different perspectives to the research agenda.
The Office of Faculty Professional Development, Diversity and Inclusion maintains it commitment to diversity and inclusion through various inititives, including the creation of advisory committes for women and diverse faculty at CUIMC, recruitment and retention of diverse faculty practices, mentorship and sponsorship opportunites, and diversity and inclusion programs and lectures.
Academic Appointments and Promotions
The academic track system at Columbia University Irving Medical Center creates a framework for faculty and academic units to define, recognize and reward work done by the faculty at the four health sciences schools. Because scholarly products may vary by the academic area of focus, the system defines scholarly products expected from faculty, as well as measures of recognition of faculty accomplishments that lead to promotion in academic rank for each area of focus. Faculty may use the documents on this website to strategically plan productive, successful and satisfying careers at CUIMC.
Sponsorship Opportunities
The Office of Faculty Professional Development, Diversity & Inclusion, with the Virginia Kneeland Frantz Society for Women Faculty provide funds to partially cover the registration costs of full-time VP&S faculty members who participate in the Association of American Medical Colleges professional development seminars for women and minority faculty. Faculty must contact the Office of Academic Affairs prior to applying to the seminars in order to take advantage of these opportunities. Please see below for details.
Faculty Mentorship
The Office of Faculty Professional Development, Diversity and Inclusion provides resources and support for facilitating successful mentoring relationships for CUIMC faculty. These mentoring resources include practical guides, resources and toolkits that help facilitate and drive successful mentoring relationships. We also have a group of senior faculty who can provide guidance to faculty in one-on-one meetings.
Faculty Recognition
Each year, the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons celebrates the achievements of its outstanding faculty through the VP&S Honors Luncheon. Faculty who were recently promoted, received tenure, and who won prestigious honors or awards are invited to attend this celebratory event, which includes remarks by the dean and special musical performances by our talented students.
