General Interest

New VP&S Faculty Orientation

The Office of Faculty Professional Development, Diversity and Inclusion hosts a New VP&S Faculty Orientation for those who have started at the Columbia University Vagelos of the College of Physicians and Surgeons within the last three years. It is held annually in the early fall.

This program offers an introduction to resources that support the success of VP&S faculty. It covers the following topics:

  • An organizational overview of CUIMC and VP&S
  • An introduction to appointments, promotion and tenure processes and pathways at CUIMC
  • An overview of CUIMC and VP&S financial organization
  • Resources for educators
  • Resources for researchers
  • Resources for clinicians
  • Overview of compliance policies and resources
  • Faculty professional development resources and opportunities

Faculty in attendance also have the opportunity to meet fellow faculty and school leaders.

This series is designed for those faculty, and covers topics such as understanding and navigating a broader range of career changes, pathways to leadership, leadership competencies, and negotiation.

Leadership and Managment

CUIMC Leadership and Management Course for Faculty

The CUIMC Leadership and Management Course for Faculty is a four-day program designed for faculty who currently have leadership/management responsibilities or who wish to include these in their career goals. Participants develop the knowledge and skills necessary for current and future leadership positions in the academic health sciences by utilizing active learning methods, including case studies, discussion and the development of a personal project.

"Communicating Values as a Leader"

This session focuses on leadership and the importance of a “values structure.” A values structure consists of a person’s eight most important values, and is useful for motivation, decision making, relationship building, focus and wellbeing. 

"Strategies for Becoming a Department Chair"

Considering becoming a department chair? Lisa Kachnic, MD, Chair of Radiation Oncology at VP&S and former Chair of Radiation Oncology at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center, discusses key strategies for planning faculty careers for leadership positions in departments.

This series covers skills essential for recruiting and managing an effective and synergistic research team.

"Writing Specific Aims" Workshop

The most vital section of any NIH grant application is the Specific Aims section. This section is the master plan and central focus of an NIH research grant and is a key part that all reviewers read. This workshop provides insight into the elements of an effective and strong Specific Aims section.

Participants are asked to bring a draft of their Specific Aims with them and work through the session on developing this draft.

GRANT Writing and Information Sessions for Enhancing Knowledge About Grant Elements

Applying for funding can be a complicated process given the ever-changing policy requirements and the ever-increasing number of required components in an application.

The GRANTWISE Seminar Series (formally EPIKAGE) provides grantsmanship tips that are applicable to all applications, as well as an overview of NIH grant opportunities that are specific to ESI faculty and trainees.

The info sessions also cover best practices for working with your administrators and guide participants to resources for preparing an application and managing an award. Each session is typically held once a year.

This 2-year program is designed to assist faculty navigating the K to R Award transition. It aims to equip clinician-scientists with appointments at VP&S or NYSPI who are recent recipients of NIH K Awards with the tools, support, and knowledge needed to successfully navigate their transition toward becoming independent scientists.

The annual Summer Institute for Teaching and Learning is a two day workshop devoted to exploring effective teaching and learning strategies in health sciences education. This event is designed for junior faculty or senior faculty who have recently taken on a new teaching role.

CUIMC Anti-Racist Educator Institute

The CUIMC Anti-Racist Educator Institute and its associated Community of Practice are designed for CUIMC faculty interested in implementing curricular and pedagogical reforms in diversity, equity and inclusion. The CUIMC Anti-Racist Educator Institute focuses on  confronting bias, systemic racism in academic and healthcare settings, and course design and facilitation strategies to create anti-racist change in learning environments. Participants will collaboratively develop pilot school and departmental anti-racist pedagogy training programs.

During these meetings, faculty have the opportunity to discuss academic career specifics with Dr. Anne Taylor, SrVP for Faculty Affairs and Career Development at CUIMC and Vice Dean for Academic Affairs. VKF Society for Women Faculty Annual Lecture

The Virginia Kneeland Frantz Society for Women Faculty offers a variety of faculty-driven programs and opportunities that target the specific needs of women faculty. Among these programs, the VKFS annual lecture provides the entire CUIMC community with the opportunity to hear directly from women leaders from a variety of professional fields on their perspectives on and experiences with success and leadership.

The John Lindenbaum Memorial Lecture Series

Dr. John Lindenbaum was a widely acclaimed hematologist, gifted teacher, great mentor and an integral part of then Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center. Just before his death in June 1997, he bestowed a gift to what is now Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons to establish an annual lecture given by a distinguished diverse scientist. This lecture series has provided the VP&S community with the opportunity to host diverse scientists from all over the country, while honoring his commitment to equality and justice in medicine and society at large.
