VP&S Affiliate Site Occupational Exposure Protocols 

If you experience an occupational exposure (e.g., needlestick, scalpel injury, mucous membrane splash, inhalation of infectious material), follow these steps: 

Always: 

  • Notify your supervisors: preceptor, attending, or clerkship site director, and clerkship director 
  • 212-305-3400 - Contact Student Health on Haven immediately   
  • If Student Health on Haven is closed: contact the clinician on call and/or go to the nearest Emergency Room
  • File an incident report at your clinical site 

Site-Specific Protocols 

 

Harlem Hospital

  • Notify clerkship site director 
  • Go to the Emergency Room 
  • After ER evaluation, report to Occupational Health Services 
    • 212-939-2680 – Hours: Mon–Fri, 8:00 AM–3:30 PM 
    • K Building, 6th Floor, 15 W. 136th St, NY, NY 10037 
  • After hours: report to ER and notify clerkship director 

Stamford Hospital

  • Notify clerkship site director 
  • During business hours: go to Employee Health 
    • 203-276-2330- Hours: Mon–Thu, 8 AM–4 PM; Fri, 7:30 AM–3:30 PM 
    • Tandet Center, Suite 102 
  • After hours / weekends / holidays: report to the Emergency Room 

Bassett Medical Center

  • Notify clerkship site director
  • 607-547-3028-Hours: Normal business hours | Employee Health 
  • After hours / holidays: go directly to the Emergency Room 

Creedmoor Psychiatric Center

  • Notify clinical supervisor and clerkship site director 
  • Go to the Creedmoor Medical Clinic during business hours 
  • 718-264-4095 - Infection Control 
  • Off-hours: report to the Medical Infirmary or a local Emergency Room in Queens 

Rockland Psychiatric Center

  • Notify supervisor and clerkship site director 
  • 845-359-1000 ext. 8229 – Employee Health 
  • 845-359-1000 ext. 8228 - Infection Control 
  • If emergency care is needed: go to Montefiore Nyack Hospital ED, 160 N. Midland Ave., Nyack, NY 

New York State Psychiatric Institute (NYSPI)

  • Notify supervisor and clerkship site director
  • Call Safety at 646-774-5100 (they will contact Infection Control Nurse)
  • If emergency care is needed: go to NYP/Columbia ED,  3985 Broadway, New York, NY 10032

James J. Peters Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center

  • Notify supervisor immediately
  • Report to the Bronx VA Emergency Department, 130 Kingsbridge Rd, Bronx, NY 10468
  • Follow up with your primary care provider
