Cancer Genetic Counseling

Students provide supervised genetic counseling services for clients being seen in the cancer genetics clinics. Students work with clients affected with or at risk for hereditary breast cancer, ovarian cancer, colon cancer, pancreatic cancer, prostate cancer, and other cancers.

Cardiovascular Genetic Counseling

Students provide supervised genetic counseling for clients being seen in the cardiogenetics clinics. Students work with adult and pediatric clients with congenital heart defects, heritable rhythm disorders, familial hypercholesterolemia, thoracic aortic aneurysm, Marfan syndrome, and cardiomyopathies.

General Genetic Counseling

Students provide supervised genetic counseling for clients being seen in the general genetics clinic. Students work with clients with multiple congenital anomalies, developmental delay/intellectual disability, hypotonia, and other nonspecific findings. Additionally, students work with pediatric and adult clients being evaluated for a variety of specific genetic disorders, including skeletal dysplasias, craniofacial disorders, neurofibromatosis, connective tissue disorders, and other single-gene and multifactorial disorders.

Inpatient Genetic Counseling

Students provide genetic counseling under supervision for clients being seen by the inpatient genetics team at Columbia/New York Presbyterian Hospital. Students will work with inpatient clients (those who are currently hospitalized) with known or suspected genetic conditions affecting various body systems.

Lab-Based Genetic Counseling

Students explore the various roles a lab-based genetic counselor can play within a clinical diagnostic genetic testing lab. Students provide supervised genetic counseling services within the lab, including facilitating genetic test ordering by health care providers, write test result reports, evaluate genetic test offerings, and support utilization management efforts.

Nephrology Genetic Counseling

Students provide supervised genetic counseling services for clients being seen in the nephrology clinics. Students work with clients affected with or at risk for acute and chronic kidney disorders across the lifespan, including investigating novel genomic findings related to kidney disease.

Neurology Genetic Counseling

Students provide supervised genetic counseling services for clients being seen in the neurology clinics. Students work with adult and pediatric clients with epilepsy, memory disorders and dementia, movement disorders, neuromuscular disorders, and neurodegenerative disorders.

Ophthalmology Genetic Counseling

Students provide supervised genetic counseling services for clients being seen in the ophthalmology genetics clinics. Students work with clients affected with or at risk for hereditary eye diseases, including Stargardt disease, Peter’s plus syndrome, macular dystrophy, Leber congenital amaurosis, cone-rod dystrophy, Usher syndrome, and Norrie syndrome.

Reproductive Genetic Counseling

Students provide supervised genetic counseling services for clients being seen in the reproductive genetics clinic. Students work with clients with abnormal prenatal screening results, abnormal prenatal ultrasound results, clients considering invasive prenatal testing (i.e., CVS, amniocentesis), and clients at high risk for fetal anomalies. Students provide genetic test results and work with clients in follow-up who continue or terminate their pregnancy.

Industry Genetic Counseling

Students will provide genetic counseling under supervision for clients in the hereditary cancer, cardiovascular, and pharmacogenomic spaces while also participating in research genetic counseling. Students will gain exposure to interpreting laboratory reports, assessing variant nomenclature and classification, and understanding the various roles GCs play in a clinical lab and population health company.
