Proton Therapy

Proton therapy is a type of radiation therapy that uses charged particles called protons to treat cancer cells. This is different from other types of external-beam radiotherapy, which uses high energy X-rays to treat cancer. In some instances, proton therapy may be recommended to decrease radiation exposure of nearby healthy tissue to radiation. The department of radiation oncology uses a personalized and multidisciplinary approach to patient care in determining potential candidacy for proton therapy. ColumbiaDoctors Radiation Oncology has an affiliation with ProCure Proton Therapy Center, where candidates for proton therapy will receive their radiation treatment. Patient care will continue under the supervision of our Director of Proton Therapy Services, Matthew Gallitto, MD, PhD,  at the proton therapy center.
