About the Program

Clinical Experience

The Cornea, Anterior Segment, and Refractive Surgery fellow manages a wide range of patients, gaining exposure to both common and complex anterior segment conditions referred from across the region. This experience provides broad clinical training and surgical exposure. Fellows participate in surgeries derived from the resident clinic, assist in faculty cases that require a level of expertise or experience higher than that of a PGY-4 resident, and will often be given the opportunity to carry out a significant portion of these procedures under the supervision of the cornea faculty.

In addition, fellows serve as a clinical instructor/attending physician, supervising and teaching residents in Cornea Clinic on a bi-weekly basis, where they direct diagnostic workup of patients under the direction of corneal attending physicians.

Research & Teaching

In addition to patient care responsibilities, fellows are required to participate in clinical or basic research in vision and will be required to complete a clinical research or basic science project. It is expected that the quality of this work be original and worthy of publication in peer-reviewed journals, with presentations at national meetings.

Fellows also contribute to teaching, presenting cases and research work at various clinical and scientific conferences, lecturing in the resident series, participating in departmental conferences such as cornea lectures, Grand Rounds, and specialized meetings.

Recent Alumni

Through a combination of rigorous training, research opportunities, and exposure to diverse patient populations, the Columbia Cornea, Anterior Segment, and Refractive Surgery Fellowship prepares future leaders in corneal and anterior segment care. Graduates of the fellowship have gone on to successful careers in both academic medicine and private practice. The list below highlights our recent fellows.
