Supplies​ and Setup

Supplies

  • Grape(s) – we prefer red grapes​
  • Marking pen​
  • Toothpick

Set up​

  • Using a marking pen, mark 4 lines on the grape skin, splitting it into 4, like a beach ball ​
  • Pass the toothpick through the grape lengthwise, as close to the middle as possible

Objectives

Primary objectives

  • Dissect two pieces of skin off of the grape, leaving it in an alternating pattern of skin/flesh. To the best of your ability:  ​
    • Keep skin pieces removed intact with no buttonholes ​
    • Leave no grape pulp on the skin pieces you remove ​
    • Avoid deep cuts into the flesh of the grapes ​

Technical objectives​

  • Handle tissue carefully and gauge tension visually as you dissect

Scoring Rubric

How long did it take you to complete both grapes? ​

  • Under 10 minutes (25 points) ​
  • 10-15 minutes (20 points) ​
  • 15-20 minutes (15 points) ​
  • 20-25 minutes (10 points) ​
  • 25-30 minutes (5 points) ​
  • >30 minutes (0 points)

Look at the FIRST piece of grape skin that you’ve removed. ​

Is it intact? Or is part of it cut off or macerated? ​

  • It is 100% intact (15 points) ​
  • >50% of the grape skin is intact (10 points) ​
  • <50% of the grape skin is intact (5 points) ​
  • It is all macerate/in pieces (0 points) ​
  • I did not remove a piece of skin from the grape (0 points)

Did you buttonhole the intact piece of grape skin? ​

  • No, it does not have any holes in it (10 points)​
  • Yes, it is buttonholed (5 points) ​
  • There is no intact piece of grape skin (0 points)
  • I did not remove a piece of skin from the grape (0 points)

Did you leave grape flesh on the grape skin? ​

  • No, there is no grape flesh left on the skin (10 points) ​
  • Yes, there is some flesh left on the skin (5 points) ​
  • There is no intact piece of grape skin (0 points)
  • I did not remove a piece of skin from the grape (0 points)

Look at the SECOND piece of grape skin that you’ve removed. ​

Is it intact? Or is part of it cut off or macerated? ​

  • It is 100% intact (15 points) ​
  • >50% of the grape skin is intact (10 points) ​
  • <50% of the grape skin is intact (5 points) ​
