Kathie-Ann Joseph '95: Gold medalist for Meritorious Service to VP&S and its Alumni Association
2022 VP&S Alumni Reunion
Kathie-Ann Joseph '95 was presented with the Gold Medal for Meritorious Service to VP&S and its Alumni Association at the VP&S Alumni Reunion on May 14, 2022, in New York City.
Kathie-Ann Dr. Joseph is a leader in the field of breast surgery whose commitment to the advancement of underrepresented minorities and women in medicine has affected countless VP&S alumni. She was deeply involved in BALSO (Black and Latino Student Organization) as a student and remained connected after graduation--always ready as a guest speaker and mentor through Kenneth A. Forde Diversity Alliance to share her insights into the field of surgery with any students who were considering the specialty. She has hosted a number of first and second-year lunches over the years with students from all backgrounds who are interested in surgery. Upon the conclusion of her term as VP&S Alumni Association president in 2018, Dr. Joseph identified a need for increased mentorship and connection for women in medicine and helped to create the VP&S Women in Medicine Collaborative. Dr. Joseph is a professor of surgery and professor of population health at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. She was named NYC Health and Hospitals' Physician of the Year in 2015, one of the top 10 Caribbean-born female doctors in the U.S. by News Americas in 2016, and is the first African American woman to achieve the rank of professor in surgery at NYU. She also holds a master's degree from Columbia's Mailman School of Public Health.
