About Our Center

The Columbia Center for Clinical Medical Ethics (CCME) is a multidisciplinary center dedicated to advancing the understanding and practice of ethical decision-making in clinical care. Established within the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University, CCME draws on the rich intellectual and clinical resources of the university and its medical center to address the most pressing ethical challenges in modern medicine.

Our Mission

CCME’s mission is to educate, advise, and lead in clinical ethics. We aim to create a healthcare environment where ethics is not an afterthought, but a foundational element of compassionate, high-quality care.

What We Do

  • Education and Training: From lectures and workshops to bedside teaching, we provide education in clinical ethics across all levels of medical training and practice.
  • Policy Development: We contribute to the development and implementation of institutional policies and guidelines that promote ethical medical practice.
  • Research: Our team engages in original research on ethical issues in healthcare delivery, medical decision-making, end-of-life care, and emerging technologies.
  • ConsultationCCME faculty and affiliated faculty serve the Columbia medical community and Columbia patients through a robust ethics consultation service.
