Overview
Tony J. C. Wang, MD, is Professor of Radiation Oncology (in Neurological Surgery) at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons (VP&S) and Co-Director of the Center for Radiosurgery/Gamma Knife Center at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC). He also serves as Chair of the Quality and Patient Safety Committee in Radiation Oncology and as Co-Leader of the Neuro-Oncology Disease Base Team at the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center (HICCC). A Fellow of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO), he is recognized internationally for his expertise in malignant and benign brain tumors.
Dr. Wang's clinical and research program focuses on primary and metastatic brain tumors. He has particular expertise in Gamma Knife stereotactic radiosurgery and in the multidisciplinary care of patients with brain metastases and high-grade glioma. His work, supported by the National Cancer Institute and industry partners, has resulted in over 150 publications. He has given over 50 invited lectures and visiting professorships nationally and internationally and is an editor of two radiation oncology textbooks. He has also helped shape national standards of care as a co-author of the ASTRO clinical practice guideline on radiation therapy for brain metastases and of the American Radium Society (ARS) appropriate use criteria for glioma and brain metastases.
Dr. Wang is a national leader in NCI-supported clinical trials. Within NRG Oncology, he serves on the Brain Tumor Core Committee and is Columbia's Institutional Principal Investigator. He also served as Brain Liaison to the Radiation Oncology Committee from 2016 to 2026. He is CNS Working Group Liaison to SWOG's Radiation Oncology Committee and serves on the NCI Brain Malignancies Steering Committee. He has served as Radiation Oncology Co-Chair for the glioblastoma trials NRG-BN007 and RTOG Foundation 3508, and as NRG Study Champion for Alliance A071801, a radiosurgery trial for resected brain metastases. At Columbia, he is Community/Affiliate Lead for the NCI Community Oncology Research Program (NCORP) and NCORP Community Chair for NRG-CC017, a phase III trial for newly diagnosed glioblastoma.
Dr. Wang received his B.A. and M.D. degrees from University of Missouri Kansas City Medical School, during which time he was also a Clinical Research Training Program Fellow at the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland. He received internship training at Flushing Hospital Medical Center. Dr. Wang received his radiation oncology training at New York Presbyterian Hospital (Columbia campus), where he was Chief Resident from 2011-2012.
