Nathaniel Kratz, MD
Overview
Nathaniel Kratz, MD, FASAM is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and a board-certified physician in Internal Medicine and Addiction Medicine. He serves as the Founding Medical Director of the Columbia University Medical Center TRANSiT (Therapeutic Resources and Assistance in Navigation to Services while in Transition) Bridge Clinic, a low-barrier, multidisciplinary program designed to improve access to care across the substance use disorder continuum. He is also an affiliate of Columbia University’s Center for Healing Opioid and Other Substance Use Disorders (CHOSEN).
Dr. Kratz holds multiple leadership roles within NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, serving as Director of Adult Community Medicine in the Division of Community and Population Health and Director of Community-Based Research for the NYP Ambulatory Care Network. His work focuses on developing and implementing innovative, community-engaged models of addiction care that integrate hospital systems, outpatient services, and community partnerships.
A recognized educator and academic leader, Dr. Kratz is the 2025–2026 Vanneck-Bailey Scholar at the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, where he is leading a longitudinal initiative to strengthen and integrate substance use disorder education across the medical curriculum. He serves as the Substance Use Disorder Curricular Theme Leader and was selected to deliver the 2025 Ewig Lectureship in recognition of his contributions to medical education.
Dr. Kratz’s scholarly work centers on health systems innovation and implementation science across the substance use disorder care continuum, with a particular focus on scalable, integrated models that bridge addiction medicine, psychiatry, and community-based care.
