Dimitris Anastassiou, PhD, is Charles Batchelor Professor of Electrical Engineering and Professor of Systems Biology. His research focuses on computational biology with emphasis on biomolecular data mining and analysis of cancer datasets shedding light on biological mechanisms for diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic applications in personalized medicine. His team has developed winning computational models in several related international challenges, including one for breast cancer prognosis.

Research

Dr. Anastassiou’s research involves the investigation of biological mechanisms in the tumor microenvironment associated with invasiveness, metastasis and resistance to therapy common in multiple types of cancer, and in the development of therapeutics targeting these mechanisms. His current work centers on identifying the mechanisms linking a particular fibroblastic differentiation in cancer to immune exclusion and tumor progression. The endpoint of this differentiation is a particular type of cancer-associated fibroblasts expressing collagen XI present in aggressive cancers, which had been computationally identified. His previous research was in the area of video technology. He is author of patents accepted as essential for the implementation of several international standards used in digital television transmission.
