Research
Dr. De Moraes has authored more than 250 peer-reviewed publications, including multiple high-impact studies on glaucoma diagnosis and progression, and has served as Principal or Co-Principal Investigator on NIH/CDC-funded research programs. Ranked among the top 10 glaucoma experts worldwide (Expertscape), he is a recipient of major distinctions, including ARVO Silver Fellowship and AAO Achievement Awards.
Primary areas of investigation
- Early and central glaucoma detection using macular OCT, pattern-based algorithms, and deep-learning diagnostic tools.
- Quantifying and predicting progression through structural–functional modeling and advanced statistical and AI methods.
- Understanding systemic and biomechanical risk factors, including blood pressure variability, nocturnal hypotension, IOP dynamics, and corneal biomechanics.
- Patient-centered clinical impact, improving reliability of testing, identifying clinically meaningful changes, and reducing missed progression.
- Innovating clinical trial methodology, including development of new glaucoma endpoints and leading NIH-, CDC-, and industry-sponsored trials.
- Translational device and technology evaluation, from home-based functional monitoring to contact-lens IOP sensors and OCT-driven decision tools.
Research Interests
- Novel Techniques for glaucoma diagnosis and treatment
