Summer Fun 2026: Friendship, Fun and Memories at the Berrie Center

There’s no time like summer at the Berrie Center! From July 13-17, 38 children with type 1 diabetes (T1D) came together for the annual Summer Fun program, joined by 10 counselors, all of whom also live with T1D. Together, they enjoyed a week filled with adventure, laughter, new experiences and plenty of opportunities to make new friends.

The week brought pediatric patients together for a series of fun-filled outings designed to encourage friendship, connection and, of course, some summer fun. The group put their teamwork to the test at an escape room, explored the history and excitement of the Intrepid Museum, and challenged themselves at FerFox Ninja Park.

When a rainy day put a pause on outdoor plans, the group headed to the movies, where popcorn and treats made for a perfect afternoon. The week ended on a high note with a day of rides, games and amusements at Rye Playland.

But the most meaningful moments of Summer Fun often happen between the activities. Over the course of the week, children had the chance to spend time with peers who understand what it’s like to live with T1D, forming friendships and creating memories that extend beyond the program itself.

The week concluded with the annual talent show and closing celebration, where parents and families joined the group for breakfast and a chance to celebrate all that made the week special. From impressive performances to plenty of smiles, it was a fitting finale to another memorable Summer Fun.

“Summer Fun is about so much more than the activities,” said Dr. Natasha Leibel, head of the pediatric program at the Berrie Center. “It’s a chance for our patients to build friendships, connect with other children who understand what it’s like to live with diabetes, and create memories that will last well beyond the week. Seeing the kids laugh, support one another and simply have fun together is what makes this program so special.”

For many years, Summer Fun has provided Berrie Center patients with a unique opportunity to have fun, build confidence and connect with other children living with T1D—all in a safe and supportive environment.

The Summer Fun program is offered free of charge to Berrie Center patients thanks to the generosity of our loyal donors. Their continued support makes it possible for children and families to experience this special week year after year.
