History of Allen Hospital Group

The Hospitalist Program at NYP–Allen Hospital originated from the Columbia University Department of Medicine’s Section of Hospitalist Medicine, established in the late 1990s. Between 1996 and 1999, a team of twelve physicians was assembled to provide inpatient care across two campuses: Milstein and Allen (formerly The Allen Pavilion).

Recognizing the unique healthcare needs of the Inwood and Riverdale communities in Upper Manhattan and the South Bronx, a dedicated group of physicians was formed to focus exclusively on the Allen campus. This team was formally incorporated into the Department of Medicine at Allen Hospital in 2003.

Over the past two decades, the program has grown from a small inpatient service caring for unassigned patients into a comprehensive, high-performing team of 23 physicians and 30 physician assistants. This growth reflects our ongoing commitment to meeting the rising demand for inpatient care while maintaining the highest standards of clinical excellence, education, and community service.

The Hospitalist PA Team at Allen Hospital

The Hospitalist PA Team at Allen Hospital was established in 2003 with just 1 physician assistant. Since its inception, the program has grown exponentially, now comprising 29 full-time PAs, including one Cardiology PA and two Supervisor PAs.

Working seamlessly alongside our physician colleagues, our PAs provide 24/7 coverage of the Hospital Medicine service, ensuring high-quality care for our patients. We take pride in the strong, collaborative relationships between the PAs & attending physicians both within and beyond the hospital. Additionally, our Hospitalist PAs manage a select census of private patients and provide cross-coverage for the General Medicine resident census overnight. Our Cardiology PA helps to manage the coordination of cardiac diagnostic testing and procedures and collaborates closely with Cardiology attendings.

A key component of our team is the Charge PA role, which serves as the vital link between the Emergency Department and the Medicine teams. This role helps streamline the admission process, ensuring safe, efficient patient flow and readiness for admission.

Beyond clinical responsibilities, our PAs actively contribute to hospital-wide initiatives in Quality & Patient Safety, Patient Flow, and Patient Experience. Their dedication and expertise make them an integral part of Allen Hospital, committed to delivering excellence in patient care.
