Comprehensive Internal Medicine Excellence Comes to Westchester: The One Sets New Standard for Specialty Care

A look into the Department of Medicine's Presence at The One

When ColumbiaDoctors at NewYork-Presbyterian The One opens in White Plains this September, it will transform how Westchester and Rockland County residents access world-class internal medicine subspecialty care. This groundbreaking 26-acre campus at 1111 Westchester Avenue brings together five premier internal medicine specialties under one roof, offering the expertise of Columbia's top-ranked academic medical center without the need to travel to Manhattan.

The One represents a revolutionary approach to internal medicine, featuring an integrated model where cardiology, oncology, gastroenterology, endocrinology, pulmonary, and rheumatology specialists collaborate seamlessly to deliver comprehensive, coordinated care. This multidisciplinary approach means patients can see multiple specialists, receive advanced diagnostics, and coordinate treatment plans all in the same facility—often on the same day.

Every aspect of The One has been designed to foster collaboration and efficiency. The facility features a state-of-the-art radiology imaging facility, including the region's first photon-counting CT scanner, comprehensive laboratory services, an ambulatory surgical center with modern procedure suites, collaborative workspace design that enables real-time specialist consultation, and same-day diagnostic capabilities to accelerate treatment decisions. Our team-based approach with advanced diagnostics allows the Department of Medicine to provide cutting-edge care right here in Westchester, bringing Columbia's renowned expertise in cardiology, oncology, gastroenterology, rheumatology, pulmonary, and endocrinology directly to the community.

Cardiovascular Care Center of Excellence

The Cardiovascular Care Center of Excellence at The One sets a new standard of care for the region. This program brings together Columbia’s world-class general cardiologists, electrophysiologists, interventional cardiologists, structural heart disease specialists, specialists in heart failure and cardiac transplant, and congenital heart disease experts, and creates a hub for cutting-edge cardiovascular care for Westchester and surrounding communities.

The center offers extensive advanced on-site capabilities, including echocardiograms and nuclear stress testing, cardiac MRI, and a photon-counting CT scanner that represents the first of its kind in Westchester County. The combination of specialty expertise and advanced cardiac testing means that patients can be rapidly evaluated for complex cardiac conditions, such as the need for minimally invasive valve procedures and investigational interventions, or advanced heart failure, cardiac amyloidosis, and complex congenital heart disease.

The facility's design enables real-time collaboration among specialists. A patient with complex cardiovascular disease can see a cardiologist, undergo imaging, and meet with subspecialists such as those in heart failure or structure heart disease—all within the same suite and often on the same day, eliminating the typical delays and coordination challenges of traditional care.

Exceptional Oncology Services

Under the leadership of Dr. Melissa Accordino and Division Chief, Dawn Hershman MD, The One's oncology program delivers cutting-edge, academic-level cancer care with the convenience of a community setting. This comprehensive program covers virtually all cancer subspecialties, offering everything from routine care to innovative clinical trials.

The program provides extensive specialty coverage across all major cancer types. The solid tumor programs encompass breast, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, and thoracic oncology, while malignant hematology services address lymphoma, leukemia, and plasma cell disorders. The facility also houses comprehensive gynecologic oncology services for all gynecologic malignancies, neurologic oncology programs for both primary and secondary brain tumors, and classical hematology services for blood disorders and coagulopathies.

The on-site infusion center provides both chemotherapy and non-chemotherapy treatments in comfortable, private stations. What distinguishes The One from community competitors is access to novel clinical trials and advanced treatments long before they become widely available elsewhere.

Comprehensive Gastroenterology Services

The gastroenterology program at The One represents a significant expansion of digestive health services for the Westchester community, bringing together a distinguished team of both adult and pediatric specialists with state-of-the-art endoscopy capabilities. When the facility opens in September 2025, patients will have access to five CUIMC-based faculty members, who will provide office consultations and comprehensive endoscopic procedures, including upper endoscopies, colonoscopies, and screening colonoscopies.

The adult gastroenterology team includes Drs. Abrams, Lebwohl, Lewis, Han, and Yan, each bringing specialized expertise alongside their general gastroenterology practices. Dr. Abrams provides subspecialty care for Barrett's esophagus, while Drs. Lebwohl, Lewis, and Han offer specialized expertise in celiac disease management. The program is further strengthened by Dr. Ellen Axenfeld, who will establish her primary practice at The One this fall, bringing extensive experience in general gastroenterology and specialized expertise in inflammatory bowel disease.

On the pediatric side, the program includes Drs. Jacqueline Jossen and Amy DeFelice, ensuring comprehensive digestive health services for patients across all age groups. This pediatric component adds significant value for families seeking specialized gastroenterological care for children without the need to travel to Manhattan.

The procedural capabilities at The One are enhanced by three experienced general gastroenterologists from established Westchester-based ColumbiaDoctors practices, including Drs. Chait, Landau, and Tsai, who will perform procedures at the facility. This collaboration ensures robust procedural coverage while maintaining the high standards of care associated with Columbia's academic excellence.

The comprehensive nature of the gastroenterology program, spanning from routine screening procedures to highly specialized subspecialty care, positions The One as a regional center of excellence for digestive health in the greater Westchester area.

Extensive Rheumatology Care

The rheumatology program at The One addresses the complex needs of patients with autoimmune and inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, which can simultaneously affect joints, muscles, and overall energy levels. The comprehensive rheumatology services at The One span from initial diagnosis through long-term management, with specialists working closely with each patient to ease pain, protect mobility, and improve quality of life at every step. Our general rheumatology services encompass the treatment of conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout, utilizing the latest medications and therapies to reduce pain and inflammation effectively. The program's joint and muscle care expertise focuses on diagnosing and managing conditions that cause chronic joint pain, muscle weakness, or stiffness, helping patients maintain their independence and active lifestyles.

Endocrinology Excellence

The endocrinology program at The One provides specialized care for patients with diabetes, thyroid disorders, and other hormonal conditions. The program emphasizes the interconnected nature of endocrine and rheumatologic conditions, particularly valuable when managing complex cases involving both autoimmune and metabolic disorders.

This integrated approach proves especially beneficial for patients with overlapping conditions, such as those managing both diabetes and inflammatory arthritis, who can seamlessly coordinate care between both specialties. The dedicated infusion center supports treatments ranging from diabetes management therapies to specialized hormonal treatments, ensuring comprehensive endocrine care under one roof.

The One Westchester Advantage

Beyond the core five specialties, The One also features pulmonary and interventional pulmonology services, including transplant evaluations. This adds another layer to the comprehensive internal medicine offering, ensuring patients with complex respiratory conditions have access to subspecialty expertise. Transplant nephrology services will also be available, providing crucial evaluation and management services for patients with advanced kidney disease in an expedited fashion.

What sets The One apart from other facilities in the region is the unique combination of academic excellence from Columbia's world-renowned faculty, cutting-edge technology that will for the first time be available in Westchester, an integrated care model enabling seamless coordination between specialties, convenient location with ample parking that eliminates the need for Manhattan travel, and comprehensive services from diagnostics to treatment under one roof.
