James J. Peters Veterans Affairs Medical Center (JJP VAMC) in Bronx, NY, is a tertiary care facility serving U.S. Veterans. The JJP VAMC is a teaching hospital providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology, as well as education, and is the top performing VA for research in the region. About the Medical Oncology and Hematology Program at JJP VAMC
Our cancer program is accredited by the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer, first in 1985, as a Veteran Affairs Cancer Program. This recognition is only given to cancer programs that provide the best patient outcomes and offer high-quality multidisciplinary patient-centered care. We are continuously re-accredited every three years, through meeting the rigorous cancer standards set by the Commission on Cancer.
Together with Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC)/ NewYork-Presbyterian (NYP), our medical oncology program is building the Columbia/J.J. Peters VAMC Cancer Center, focused on delivering state of the art cancer therapy to veterans with a complement of research both laboratory and clinical to arm our veterans battling cancer.
Our medical-oncology physicians have clinical appointments with CUIMC, and fellows from CUMC’s Division of Hematology and Oncology rotate at the JJP VA as part of their fellowship training program. We serve as a direct referral site for cancer care for patients from Hudson Valley (including Montrose and Castle Point), expanding our catchment area to the border of PA/NY (Port Jervis) and the Connecticut line (Carmel/Putnam County). Only 39 out of 153 VA medical centers have Radiation Oncology onsite, and the JJP VAMC radiation oncology serves patients from as far away as West Haven VA (Yale, New Haven). We see over 1,000 patients each year with cancer, many of which are discussed at our weekly multi-disciplinary tumor board. We conduct research studies in collaboration with Urologic Oncology Surgery, Head & Neck Cancer Surgery, Dermatology, and Radiation Oncology. We have surgical, medical, and radiation oncologists on staff, an oncology PharmD pharmacist, full imaging capabilities and a dedicated NP oncology case navigator/NP-run survivorship clinic. Bronx VA is the only VA with a PET MRI pending onsite.

- Lung cancer, prostate cancer, head and neck cancer, colon cancer, pancreatic cancer—using precision medicine for targeted cancer therapy including immunotherapies.

Other Centers of Excellence at JJP VAMC
Today the James J. Peters VAMC has 311 hospital beds and 120 nursing home beds and operates as a regional referral point for Spinal Cord Injury (SCI), advanced head and neck surgeries, as well as regional referrals for Medical/Surgical subspecialties. For example, the James J. Peters VAMC SCI Patient Care Center is the referral point for VISN’s 2, 3, and 4, as well as Department of Defense (DOD). JJP VAMC is also home to the VISN 2 Geriatric Research Education and Clinic Center (GRECC) and VISN 2 South Mental Illness Research, Education & Clinical Center (MIRECC). Our GRECC research program addresses the need to evaluate and redesign elements of the health care delivery system to provide patient-centered care for older veterans, who require coordinated, continuous care for chronic disease and disability, and specialized acute and end-of-life care. Our MIRECC aims to enhance the recovery of Veterans with Serious Mental Illness diagnoses of Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, and Borderline Personality Disorder. MIRECC is funded by Department of Defense. Our Columbia/J.J. Peters VAMC Cancer Center is being built on this outstanding reputation and tradition.
