Judith Korner, MD, PhD

The cornerstone of obesity therapy is diet, physical activity, and behavioral modification. Unfortunately, this approach is rarely successful in achieving maintenance of a reduced body weight over the long-term. Medications can be effective, but there is a wide range of individual response that is poorly understood. Bariatric/metabolic surgery is the most effective treatment to achieve long-term weight loss and improvement in obesity-related co-morbidities.

Dr. Korner’s research is focused on the pathophysiology and treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes. A translational research approach is used to explore the neurohormonal mechanisms of weight loss, changes in appetite, and improvement in diabetes after bariatric surgery. Another focus is to understand the mechanism of action of weight loss medications and discover biomarkers that can be used to predict an individual’s response to such medications.
