Our Approach

EQUIP supports Learning Health System (LHS) scientists through a phased development model designed to move scholars from application to independent funding and future mentorship roles.

LHS Scientists are guided through a structured approach supported by funding, training, education, mentorship, tools, and coordinated resources. The "+" in Submission+, Project+, and Disseminate+ represents the significant LHS infrastructure that works together to support each scientist’s success.

Rather than a single award, EQUIP provides an integrated development pathway.

The EQUIP Development Cycle

Circular diagram showing the EQUIP research development cycle from RFA launch to independent funded LHS scientists, supported by infrastructure, education, mentorship, analytics, and dissemination.

1. Launch of Request for Applications

The process begins with the launch of a Request for Applications. Interested candidates prepare and submit a Letter of Intent.

2. Submission+

Applicants selected to move forward prepare a full proposal with coordinated infrastructure support.

Submission Plus includes:

  • Didactics

  • Mentorship

  • Consultative support

  • Stakeholder partners

  • Statisticians

  • Data scientists

This phase helps scholars learn to navigate funding processes while strengthening the scientific rigor and feasibility of their work.

3. EQUIP Review

The EQUIP review committee evaluates proposals and selects six scholars for the Learning Health System pathway.

4. Project+

Selected scholars receive structured support during project implementation.

Project Plus includes:

  • Education and continued training

  • Team based mentorship

  • Functional expertise in:

    • Informatics

    • Data extraction

    • Data analysis

This phase is designed to help scholars conduct high quality LHS research within complex health system environments.

5. Dissemination+

EQUIP supports scholars in sharing their work and building national impact.

Dissemination Plus includes:

  • Information design

  • Communications support

  • Conference preparation

  • Publication support

Scholars learn how to effectively translate findings to multiple audiences including health system leaders, policymakers, and academic communities.

The Outcome

Through this phased approach, LHS Scientists become independent funded researchers and future mentors.

The EQUIP model is intentionally designed to build sustainable careers in Learning Health System science by integrating funding, education, analytics, infrastructure, and dissemination into one coordinated pathway.
