Message From the Director

Despina Kontos, PhD

The rapid evolution of artificial intelligence (AI) and data-driven technologies is transforming the landscape of medicine—redefining how we prevent, detect, diagnose, and treat complex diseases. By leveraging AI and advanced computational methods, we have an unprecedented opportunity to personalize care, improve health outcomes, and drive medical breakthroughs that were once unimaginable.

At the Center for Innovation in Imaging Biomarkers and Integrated Diagnostics (CIMBID), our goal is to advance research, education, and clinical translation in AI-driven imaging biomarkers and integrated diagnostics. Collaboration lies at the heart of our work. We bring together the brightest minds at Columbia University—spanning disciplines in medical imaging, computer science, biomedical informatics, bioengineering, systems biology, and public health—to conduct cutting-edge, rigorous, and impactful research.

The challenges before us are complex, whether they involve developing interpretable AI models, addressing bias in datasets, or ensuring that our innovations translate meaningfully into clinical practice. However, these challenges also present exciting opportunities to pioneer solutions that enhance accuracy and efficiency in healthcare. Through multidisciplinary collaboration, we aim to bridge the gap between technological innovation and clinical application, ensuring that our advancements translate meaningfully into real-world patient care.
