Understanding Tools to Assess Aerobic Capacity, Physical Activity in Spinal Muscular Atrophy

Dr. Jacqueline Montes, PT, EdD, was recently featured on NeurologyLive. Dr. Montes, an Associate Professor of Rehabilitation and Regenerative Medicine at Columbia University Medical Center provided insight on the tools and gaps in care for assessing physical capacity in patients with spinal muscular atrophy.

Nusinersen has been used to treat approximately 3,700 adults with spinal muscular atrophy. It was approved in 2016, and several studies have demonstrated the meaningful improvements on core assessments of motor function. However, few have reported on aerobic capacity or physical activity. Dr. Montes conducted an analysis aimed to assess changes in these outcomes for patients treated with Nusinersen over a 6-month period, using post hoc trail data.
